Full scholarships for full-time postgraduate study in any subject at the University of Cambridge are awarded to deserving international applicants. About two-thirds of these scholarships will be granted to PhD candidates, with approximately 25 awards available in the US round and 55 in the global round.

Courses in which Gates Cambridge Scholarships are not available include:

  • Non-degree courses
  • PGCE
  • MBBChir Clinical Studies
  • Part-time degrees
  • MFin, or Master of Finance
  • MD Doctor of Medicine degree (6 years, part-time)
  • Graduate Course in Medicine (A101)
  • Any undergraduate degree, including a second BA or an undergraduate BA associated with another BA
  • MBA (Master of Business)
  • Doctorate in Business (BusD)

Scholarship Coverage 

The following benefits are available to the Gates Cambridge Scholarship recipient:

  • The university composition fee assessed at the appropriate rate
  • For PhD researchers, a support payment for one student is available for up to four years. At the 2023-2024 rate, a full year costs £20,000 (pro-rata for shorter courses).
  • The cost of arriving immigration fees and the Immigration Health Surcharge
  • A single economy ticket is valid for both the beginning and end of the course.
  • Money for advancing academia: Depending on how long you’ve been studying, you may be eligible for up to £2,000 in conference and seminar expenses.
  • Fieldwork: You may be eligible to keep your current maintenance pay while conducting fieldwork for your PhD. The University Composition Fee, not the Trust, should cover any additional fieldwork expenses.
  • The 2023-2024 family allowance is £11,604 for a single child and £16,548 for two or more. No money is offered to a partner.
  • Money for hardship: for unforeseen challenges that the student faces.
  • Applying for maternity/paternity leave allows you to pause your studies for up to six months while still receiving your maintenance stipend, if necessary.
